Young men are not a monolith
They are not just one thing. Our young men are intelligent, strong, and creative. There is a place for them in the arts, and a place for them here at TheGifted Arts.
The Attack
Our young men are under attack. Their confidence, their gifts, and their freedom to dream are being worn down by harmful narratives, relentless pressure, and a lack of access to real mental health support.
Black and Brown boys carry the heaviest weight. They are told to be hard and keep it inside. They are handed a narrow idea of who they are allowed to be. They rarely see healthy reflections of themselves. Too often, they carry it in silence until it becomes something far heavier.
What the data shows
For the first time on record, young Black men are dying by suicide at higher rates than their white peers.
Between 2014 and 2024, suicide deaths among Black Americans rose 53 percent, more than ten times faster than the rise among white Americans. Experts point to isolation, silence, and a lack of access to care that understands them.

Our Response
We built G.Y.M. to meet our boys where they are and grow them into their full selves. It gives them a place to develop every part of who they are. Emotional, mental, physical, and spiritual. The arts are one of the best ways to do it.
Emotional
He learns to name it.
The arts give a young man language for what he carries, so he works through it instead of burying it.
Mental
He learns to think.
Rehearsal and craft sharpen his focus and patience, and teach him to solve problems he has never seen before.
Physical
He learns presence.
Movement, breath, and performance teach him to use his body with control and confidence, on a stage and off it.
Spiritual
He learns who he is.
He connects to something bigger than himself, and comes to know what he values and why he matters.

Inside G.Y.M.
He is never doing this alone.
He is guided by men who have walked the road before him and who look like him. He always has someone in his corner.
He grows into himself.
He explores who he is as a young man on his own terms, with room to be strong and gentle, serious and playful, all at once.
He has somewhere to put it.
He gets a real place for what is inside him. Creating gives him proof of what he is capable of, over and over.
Self-worth. Confidence. Drive.
